In Louisiana time spent outdoors is cherished. Erecting and caring for a genuine Louisiana cypress wood duck box is a perfect way to spend that quality time outdoors, give a little back to Mother Nature and is a fun activity to share with children and grandchildren alike.
Our wood duck boxes are made exclusively for Louisiana Living by hand in our hometown of New Iberia, Louisiana. Each box is crafted using one-inch thick, rough cut, solid Louisiana cypress. The boxes are made strong and sturdy to stand up to any outdoor conditions. The entire box is "glued and screwed" for superior longevity. The nesting cavity and the entrance hole are constructed using Wildlife & Fisheries specs. An interior "ladder" is actually cut into the cypress to assist young ducklings during their maiden climb out of the box cavity. A convenient side door is included for ease of cleaning and is perfect for viewing incubating hens. Great care and research has gone into the creation of our proven boxes, for example, the bottom of the box has a recessed floor along with small 45 degree angles cut out of the corners for better drainage to avoid any moisture from wicking up the interior walls causing the bottom of the box to experience pre-mature rot. The roof of the box overlaps the walls of the box and is angled for ideal rain run-off, providing adding protection to the box.
Did we mention how attractive they are? Once your box has been exposed to the great outdoors expect it to turn an attractive shade of silver-grey. Each box weights an impressive 26 lbs., comes fully assembled and includes pre-drilled holes located on an extended mount for ease of attaching to a tree, wood or metal post. (Poles are not included.) We suggest you add a predator guard to each box, you can find an excellent guard by visiting www.prairiepotholeday.com. We also suggest you adopt an annual maintenance program for your duck houses, by doing so you will experience a much better nesting success rate. Depending on where you live, wood ducks typically start nesting from February through April. It is interesting to know that female wood ducks exhibit extreme site fidelity, returning to the same breeding ground year after year virtually assuring a growing wood duck population on your property. Each box is 36 inches tall, 16.5 inches wide and 16 inches deep. Made in Louisiana.
